We spent Christmas 2016 in Portland and simply loved it – skipping the traditional turkey and trimmings for fresh lobster and crab.
The best part was swimming the Weymouth harbour on Christmas morning. An organised event, run by the Weymouth and Portland Lions club. You need to pre-register for the event. It is certainly a bracing and daring way to start of the Christmas celebrations.
Two pub landlords started the event in 1947, based on a silly dare. Around 250 swimmers now brave the waters, with the harbour-side fully lined with spectators, cheering on the chilled competitors. Weymouth adds that extra bit of sparkle – as always – and many people were in fancy dress. We doubt you will not see more Father Christmas’s in bathing suits anywhere else in the world!
